Bra Poverty Is Real and It Is Affecting Young Women Across Nigeria
In many communities across Nigeria, an overlooked form of poverty continues to affect the dignity, confidence, and health of young women. Bra poverty, the lack of access to proper, well fitting bras, remains a silent issue rarely discussed in public spaces.
For many girls, wearing worn out, ill fitting, or shared bras is not a choice but a consequence of economic hardship. This reality affects their physical comfort, participation in daily activities, and self esteem. Over time, the absence of proper support can also contribute to breast discomfort and discourage young women from paying attention to their breast health.
The Bra Project was created to confront this issue directly. Through community based bra distribution programs and education, the initiative provides young women with access to quality bras while also opening conversations around dignity and body awareness.
By addressing bra poverty, The Bra Project is not only meeting a material need but also restoring confidence and encouraging women to care for their bodies without shame. The organization believes that access to proper undergarments is not a luxury, but a basic need tied to dignity and wellbeing.
As conversations around women’s health continue to grow, addressing bra poverty must become part of the national dialogue.
